Late Summer and the Earth Element – Stuck or Pivoting?

Most people are familiar with the four seasons — Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. But in Five Element acupuncture, there’s a fifth: Late Summer, governed by the Earth Element. It’s the pivot point of the year, the pause between the outward expansion of Summer and the inward gathering of Autumn. Think of the fullness of harvest, the last warm days, the impulse to slow down and take stock.

Earth is the element of nourishment, digestion, home, and center. It relates to the Stomach and Spleen, and to our ability to take in — food, ideas, care from others — and transform it into something sustaining. When Earth is in balance, we feel grounded, well-fed, and able to support both ourselves and the people we love. When it’s out of balance, we might notice:

  • Worry or overthinking that loops without resolution
  • Digestive sluggishness, bloating, or irregular appetite
  • Feeling scattered, ungrounded, or overly responsible for others
  • Craving sweetness — literally or emotionally — as a stand-in for real nourishment

A few ways to support your Earth Element this season:

    • Eat warm, cooked, simply spiced foods — soups, stews, roasted root vegetables — rather than raw or cold foods, which can tax digestion.
    • Keep a steady rhythm. Earth thrives on regularity: consistent mealtimes, consistent sleep, consistent small routines.
    • Practice single-tasking. Worry often comes from the mind trying to hold too much at once. Give your full attention to one thing at a time, even briefly.
    • Let yourself be nourished, not just nourishing. If you’re someone who takes care of everyone else, this is a season to let some care flow back to you.

    How acupuncture can help

Seasonal transitions are exactly when the body benefits most from support — helping the system pivot smoothly rather than getting stuck. If you’ve been feeling foggy, worried, digestively off, or just generally in need of a reset, this is a wonderful time to come in for a treatment.
