The Five Elements in Chinese medicine describe the natural cycle of creation that sustains all life—including us. Each element gives rise to the next, just like the seasons.
Winter flows into spring.
Spring becomes summer.
And on it goes.
Right now, we’re just beginning the shift from winter into spring, and this transition is one I often notice reflected in my patients’ pulses. It’s common to feel more blocks or imbalances at this time of year.
In Five Element acupuncture, health depends on smooth, balanced, and harmonious energy. But seasonal transitions—especially from the stillness of winter to the rising energy of spring—can sometimes throw us off.
So, how do you typically feel when spring arrives?
* Fatigued
* Unmotivated
* Overwhelmed
* Stuck
If so, you’re not alone.
Spring belongs to the Wood Element, the energy of growth, vision, and action. After a season of rest, Wood gives us the spark to make plans, dream about what’s next, and start bringing those ideas to life.
In the body, Wood is expressed through the Liver and Gallbladder meridians.
Think of it this way:
The Liver is the architect, creating the vision.
The Gallbladder is the contractor, making decisions and carrying out the plan.
When Wood energy is balanced, we feel clear, motivated, and able to move forward.
When it’s out of balance, we may feel:
— Stuck without a clear vision.
— Unable to make decisions.
— Disorganized or easily frustrated.
— Chronically fatigued.
If you’re feeling out of balance here are some things you can do:
—Come in for a treatment to see if you have any blocks in your pulses.
—Rest and rebuild your reserves now. Let yourself slow down once in awhile or often.
—Boost your energy by eating healthy, moving (yoga, walking, exercise), meditating
—Do a professional liver cleanse
